Down to the Wire

Quincy Scores at Buzzer

The 2009 fantasy season has gotten off to a bang thanks to Matt Forte. Down by 3.8 points, Quincy needed some help before the 2nd quarter ended. Forte and the Bears began a 98 yard drive on their own 2 yard line. Forte was unable to make the big plays Quincy needed after being shoved at the Denver 1 yard line. Then, on 3rd down, Forte caught a TD pass in the endzone to give Quincy the home opening victory.

There could be more thrillers to come. Ephrata will need 9.6+ points from Andre Johnson to defeat my Grizzlies, and East Wenatchee will need 17.4+ combined points from Adrian Peterson and Steve Slaton. Both should go down to the wire. Stay tuned for Monday night football folks!

Don't Look to Much Into it

Preseason Illusions

The fantasy season has begun and with Sunday and Monday games left, we already have one game finished. Cashmere defeated Ellensburg in Ellensburg 41.4 - 30.0. While Cashmere may be a top team this year, there's no need for Ellensburg, or any team for that matter, to get down on their roster in the preseason.

Even in the 3rd week of the preseason, the week where most teams play their starters through 3 quarters, some coaches will sit their stars very early. For example, Ellensburg's star RBs Steven Jackson and Darren McFadden both played 4 drives combined. that is not going to happen in the regular season!

Star RBs like DeAngelo Williams and LaDainian Tomlinson didn't even play! So no need to panic, save that for Week 4 if your team is 0-3.

Fantasy Baseball Talk in August?

I am now releasing the name of a fantasy baseball league we will be having next season. The 2010 inaugural season of the Golden Sombrero Fantasy Baseball League (GSFBL) will begin in April of 2010. We have yet to secure anything more then the following.

-League's name

-The GSFBL will use American League players only(No National League)

-There will be only 6 franchises

-The 6 represent towns will be Leavenworth, Ephrata, Chelan, Quincy, Mattawa, and Moses Lake.

-I will own the Leavenworth franchise, I am thinking about naming the team the Hawks, but that isn't final. The colors, blue and gold, and final.

-The other 5 franchises are open for the taking.

Preseason: Week 2 Updates

Preseason Week 2

These updates are from Saturday only, I posted updates from the Thursday and Friday games in the post below this one. Top RBs appear to be in full swing after Week 2. Remember the Jets play at the Ravens on Monday,

Updates

-Ronnie Brown appears to be the focal point of the offense for Miami, constantly being seen in the wildcat formation. He is a solid fantasy Top 15 RB.

-DeAngelo Williams looked electric against Miami, in the rain he put up 40 rushing yards on 8 carries for a TD.

-James Davis looked like the deal for Cleveland. He will see carries this season, question is, how many?

-Nobody looked for in the Pittsburgh-Washington. Only fantasy stud was Santonio Holmes.

-Maurice Jones-Drew is not seeing a lot of carries in the preseason, not sure if that is done on purpose or not.

-Derrick Ward looked much better this week, and should have a good season if he doesn't share carries with Earnest Graham.

-Stash the name Troy Williamson away.

-Marshawn Lynch appears to be poised for a tank season. I think he will vanish from the fantasy radar after this season.

-Ryan Grant posted 12.4 fantasy points in a short amount of time. I personally think he will be a Top 10 fantasy RB in 2009.

-Aaron Rodgers continues to impress, I think he has a shot to be the #2 fantasy QB in the NFL.

-Drew Bress looked good against Houston, as did Matt Schaub.

-Steve Slaton looked better last night. Still cautious though.

-Ahmad Bradshaw is going to drive Brandon Jacobs owners insane.

-Matt Forte looked as dominant as ever last night, putting up 12.7 fantasy points up against a stout Giants defense.

-Glenn Coffee is going to be the biggest handcuff in the NFL this year. That's right, I said it.

-LaDainian Tomlinson is SO over the hill.

-Justin Forsett is rising as a sleeper, and Matt Hasselbeck looks to be back in his pro bowl form

I will be posting live updates on Monday for the Ravens vs. Jets game, another waiver wire will occur Tuesday.

Bring Out The Chains: Turner Number 1?

Well, the preseason always shifts the fantasy status for many players. Nearing our first ever action in the CGFFL, all owners are gazing at that preseason games hoping their current players are making progress. Keep your eyes pealed! The season is 6 days away.

Opening Segment - Our focus this week is on Michael Turner, the Atlanta RB who exploded onto the scene in 2008 is lighting the preseason up. Turner has placed a 24.8 points on the scoreboard in only 3 series of play, and has been bringing up the nagging question, is Michael Turner the #1 RB in fantasy football? Most leagues have Turner going anywhere from #2 to #4, but few have acknowledged whether Turner should be taken ahead of fantasy giant Adrian Peterson. Turner was taken by my Wenatchee Grizzlies at #4, but his performances suggest he may be the guy to take in other leagues at #1. Only time will tell.

Player Updates

-That Brett Favre guy is back.

-Jonathan Stewart has still yet to play a game or practice in over a week. His status is one to watch. If Stewart stays on the mend, the stock of DeAngelo Williams and Mike Goodson grows.

-Chris Johnson continues to struggle as LenDale White and Javon Ringer plead their case for more time.

-Glenn Coffee appears to be rising into the handcuff conversation. Possibly hampering Frank Gore's stock.

-Brandon Marshall has been working with the Denver scout team, and looks like a big bust candidate for 2009.

-Oh, did I mention that Brett Favre guy is back?

-Tom Brady has posted good numbers through his first few preseason games. Looks poised to be another Top 3 fantasy QB.

-Brian Westbrook says he is healthy but continues to have limited work. The way LeSean McCoy is playing, those two will split carries as long as Westbrook stays healthy. If not, McCoy's stock sores.

-Joesph Addai has looked okay with the new look Colts, but Brown does look better. Brown is a sleeper to do big things this year.

-I personally think Ryan Grant is a sleeper to have a big season.

-More updates throughout the football weekend in another post!

League News - Well, its been to many months since last season, but fantasy football season will return next Thursday when the Jaguars and Eagles kick off! Be sure to send me your starters by Tuesday!

The Qwest for the Onion

The Chase Begins

Week 14 is the week we hold our CGFFL Championship, the games name will be the "Onion Bowl" and it will be held in Walla Walla. The championship game will be named the Onio Bowl(ONB)from 2009-2011 and then we will decide to either keep the name and location of change. Chances are we will keep the idea of a neutral location.

2009 Featured Games

In the Spotlight

Each week throughout the regular season we will have one featured game for the weekend. In which I will keep an updated scoreboard above the forum for just that game. As if its our one game on T.V. weekly. I'd like to get every team a few games on our featured game board, but from Weeks 9-12 I have the right to change the featured game to a game with more playoff or rivalry significance. Obviously I will feature both conference titles and the championship during those weeks. Without more delay, here are the featured games of the 2009 regular season.

Featured Games

Week 1 - Moses Lake vs Chelan
Week 2 - East Wenatchee vs Cashmere
Week 3 - Cashmere vs Quincy
Week 4 - Ephrata vs Ellensburg
Week 5 - Cashmere vs Chelan
Week 6 - East Wenatchee vs Wenatchee
Week 7 - Chelan vs Quincy
Week 8 - Moses Lake vs Ephrata
Week 9 - Ellensburg vs Quincy *
Week 10 - Ephrata vs Cashmere *
Week 11 - Moses Lake vs Wenatchee *
Week 12 - Ephrata vs East Wenatchee *

*Subject to change

Preseason Games Changed

Battle at the Lake

I've decided to change the preseason matchups for next week. Looking at the 2009 schedule, I thought it would be fitting if we made the 1 team each owner doesn't play in the regular season, the team they play in the preseason. So, with that said, here are next weeks games. Yes we are only 1 week away from our first action in the CGFFL! The featured game of the week will be East Wenatchee traveling to "The Lake" to face Chelan

Also, we have 2 preseason games tonight! Be sure to see how LeSean McCoy and Donald Brown pan out.

I will be releasing the featured games of the regular season soon. Oh....and yes the Quincy - Moses Lake game did not change.

2009 East Wenatchee Owls Preview

Projection: 4-8 (1-5)
Projected Rank: #8

East Wenatchee Owls Info

Owner: Scott Jennings
Team Name: Owls
Colors: Red, Green, and Silver
Location: East Wenatchee
Favorite NFL Team: Seattle Seahawks
Franchise Player: Adrian Peterson - RB - MIN
Stadium Name: Quiznos Stadium (East Wenatchee, Washington)

2009 East Wenatchee Roster

Starters

QB - M. Ryan - ATL
WR - T. Houshmandzadeh - SEA
WR - W. Welker - NE
RB - A. Peterson - MIN
RB - S. Slaton - HOU
RB/WR - M. Barber - DAL

Bench

QB - M. Hasselbeck - SEA
RB - L. Johnson - KC
WR - D. Jackson - PHI
WR - D. Bess - MIA

Overview

The Owls opened the 2009 campaign better then anyone did, by obtaining the #1 pick for the 2009 draft. Owner Scott Jennings did not take any gambles with the #1 pick, he took the obvious #1 pick in Adrian Peterson, who is more likely to repeat another big year then anyone. Jennings is very high on his QB Matt Ryan, whom he took fairly early. Especially when other Top 8 QBs were available. Other then Peterson, Jennings selected 2 sink or swim RBs in Marion Barber and Steve Slaton. Barber appears to be poised to lose a lot of carries to Felix Jones this season, and Steve Slaton looks to have lost some goaline carries to Chris Brown. All could hurt the East Wenatchee Owls. WRs Wes Welker and T.J. Houshmandzadeh are both poised for monster 2009 seasons, and will help carry this team. The bench is arguably one of the worst in the league with Matt Hasselbeck, a injury prone QB returning from a nagging back injury. Larry Johnson used to be a fantasy dominator, now in Todd Haley's offense, he is lucky if he sees 200 carries. DeSean Jackson is a great backup whom I think will replace Marion Barber as a starter by Week 5, and Davone Bess will get his receiving yards, but isn't much of a TD guy. East Wenatchee has potential as all teams do, but we predict many teams being in the 4-8 to 6-6 mold. Games can go either way but we see the Owls as a 4-8 team who struggles in conference play with a 1-5 record.

Leopards Add Brett Favre

He will Never Die...

Well.....everyone else is making a big deal out of it, so I felt I should do the same. Hours after the Vikings had signed the former Packer, the Moses Lake Leopards dropped Kyle Orton and added Brett Favre. Dustin Hansen explained "I feel Favre could be a nice spark to my fantasy team in the weeks that I need him. Brady will carry me most of the way, but maybe Favre could be just what the doctor ordered for Brady's bye week" Hansen said. Oddly enough, Minnesota happens to play Green Bay on New England's bye week. Adding more headlines to Moses Lake's game with Ephrata on that weekend.

Football season is nearing, hopefully the Favre headlines will fade as the season starts and he begins to suck.

Preseason: Week 1 Updates

Preseason Week 1(Technically, Week 2)

The preseason is in full swing this weekend. Sorry for the delay folks, I will get to the previews soon. Here are some notables from the preseason thus far. I will update this post through the Panthers @ Giants game Monday.

Updates

-Tom Brady appeared to be back in form on Thursday, by thrashing the Eagles defense for 100 passing yards and 2 TDs in only 1 half. Moses Lake may have the best fantasy QB around.

-With the return of Tom, Randy Moss appears to be ready for a breakout year.

-RB LeSean McCoy clearly looks to be the real deal, I'm predicting he will receive majority of the carries by Week 6.

-In only 1 quarter of play, Ray Rice put up 6 fantasy points. But Willis McGahee still looks like a big handcuff.

-Rashard Mendenhall looked ordinary, he needs to play more stellar in order to separate himself from Willie Parker and Mewelde Moore.

-Felix Jones looks like he may see majority of the carries in the Dallas backfield, as did Oakland RB Darren McFadden. Both clearly looked like the best RBs their respective teams had.

-Mark Sanchez looked very good in his pro debut, as did RB Shonne Greene. Both should be monitered throguhout the preseason.

-Sage Rosenfels impressed, but he is merely a blimp on anyone's fantasy radar.

-Joesph Addai looked okay, not bad. Donald Brown looked great though, this battle will be decided during the season. One of them should be a great late season addition.

-Chad Ochocinco appears to be back in form. He and Chris Henry are ones to watch.

-Glenn Coffee seems to be emerging as a handcuff to Frank Gore.

-Kyle Orton looked extremely bad.

-Michael Turner finished his day with 12.3 fantasy points, Not bad for one quarter.

-Kevin Smith was being used a lot in the run game and the pass game for the Lions. He will be involved a lot in this run based offense. Smith is a sleeper to have a breakout season.

UPDATE: 8/15/09 9:32 PM

-Detroit RB Aaron Brown could emerge as a handcuff to Kevin Smith, guy looks electric.

-Jay Cutler looked okay in his Bears debut, a bit rusty. He definitely needs some more weapons.

-Aaron Rodgers came out firing for the Packers, scoring on the first drive and accumulating 9.4 fantasy points to start the game.

-Ryan Grant looked stellar as well, putting up 26 rushing yards on 6 carries and a touchdown. (8.6 fantasy points)

-Steve Slaton started out very slow, and was outperformed by Chris Brown. Brown finished with 25 yards on 5 carries and a TD. This should be watched carefully.

-LT did not look particularity effective.

-Vince Young had a strong night, might be pushing Collins now.

-Chris Johnson had only 7 yards on 7 carries. The Bucs defense isn't a juggernaut by anyone's standards. Hopefully Johnson gets out of this funk.

-Really can't tell if the Bucs are going to give even carries or not. Graham looked bad, and Ward wasn't all that much better,

-Didn't get to see anything from James Davis.

-Looks like the Seahawks will try to establish a run game. Julius Jones looked okay, if he can get a good amount of carries, he could be a good RB/WR slot option.

-Matt Schaub looked like a pro-bowler out there today.

More later folks, I will update as the games go on.

Bring Out The Chains: White Stealing TDs?

This is our first of a weekly addition of "Bring Out The Chains". Bring Out The Chains (BOTC) will be a weekly update on all the crucial news within the CGFFL. From player news to occasional league news.

Opening Segment - This week weeks opening segment is on Chris Johnson and LenDale White, the two Tennessee Titans who recently divorced and are no longer "Smash and Dash". Johnson and White along with the Oilers...I mean Titans...played in the very first game of 2009 last night. The game featured a fake punt and Terrell Owens, among other things. But what caught my eye was LenDale White coming in for Chris Johnson near the goal line. White neded up scoring and stealing the 6 fantasy points away from Top 10 RB Chris Johnson. This is something worth monotoring this preseason.

Player Updates

-Carolina Panther's WR Steve Smith was carted off at practice today with an apparent shoulder injury, no verdict yet.

-DeAngelo Williams back at practice today, Stewart had to sit.

-Ray Rice was named the starting RB for the Baltimore Ravens in the latest roster released by the Ravens. Rice has potential to be a Top 10 fantasy RB this season. Lucky the Cops...

-Antonio Bryant will be out 3-4 weeks with a torn meniscus in his knee. This could be a lingering issue for Bryant this season.

-LaDainian Tomlinson sayd he wants to play this preseason. I hope we get to see if he's made progress.

-Don't look to much into this, but Earnest Graham was named the starting RB ahead of Derrick Ward for the Bucs.

-Donnie Avery will be out 4-6 weeks with an injury, hence Moses Lake and Cashmere's trade was declared invalid.

-Calvin Johnson was wearing a cast on his thumb, more on this later.

League News - The question was asked why we are having our 1 preseason game in Week 3 of the preseason. The reason is because majority of the teams in the NFL play their starters through the 3rd quarter in that week.

We chose the games by projecting regional rivals for each team. Should be fun to see who gets the early pointless bragging rights.

I will give you East Wenatchee's preview tomorrow!

Preseason Games Released

In Week 3 of the preseason, we will be holding 1 preseason game for each of the CGFFL franchises. Scroll down to Week 3 to see all the NFL preseason games that week. Below are the matchups. You will start your lineups as if it were a regular game. This preseason game will not inflict your regular season overall record. Should be fun though!

Our wait is finally over! Football season has arrived! The Buffalo Bills and Tennessee Titans will play in the traditional Hall of Fame Game. The Titans will pose as the Houston Oilers for not only this game but 4 others in 2009! The fantasy stars featured in this game will play few downs, but none the less it will be exciting.

Game time is 5 PM boys! Have fun!

2009 Chelan Gulls Preview

Projection: 6-6 (3-3)
Projected Rank: #T3

Chelan Gulls Info

Owner: Perry Lucas
Team Name: Gulls
Colors: Blue, Green, and Gold
Location: Lake Chelan
Favorite NFL Team: Buffalo Bills
Franchise Player: Chris Johnson - RB - TEN
Stadium Name: Michael Fabiano Stadium "The Lake" (Chelan, Washington)

2009 Chelan Roster

Starters

QB - J. Cutler - CHI
WR - L. Fitzgerald - ARI
WR - G. Jennings - GB
RB - C. Johnson - TEN
RB - K. Moreno - DEN
RB/WR - T. Owens - BUF

Bench

QB - M. Schaub - HOU
RB - C. Wells - ARI
RB - F. Jones - DAL
RB - R. Mendenhall - PIT

Overview

WENATCHEE - Every year in fantasy football, owners come into their drafts to load their team up with the next start rookies like Matt Forte and Chris Johnson. Chelan Gulls owner Perry Lucas took their strategy ti the extreme. Chelan Gulls drafted Knowshon Moreno, Chris Wells, Shonne Greene, and Rashard Mendenhall. Greene was just recently traded to Wenatchee for Felix Jones, another up and coming RB. Obviously Perry Lucas likes his RBs, "I've always leaned towards RBs, and after last seasons barrage of sleeper RBs, I made sure I had a whole stable of them to myself. One of them has to turn out like Matt Forte, right?" Lucas chuckles. The Gulls will roll the dice this season, hoping they can hit the jackpot and land the next up and coming RB(s), but the Gulls will feature more then just sleepers in 2009. Franchise player Chris Johnson and WR Larry Fitzgerald will carry this team until the sleepers can pick up the pace. We see some great potential in this team, players like Wells, Moreno, Mendenhall, etc. all the have the ability to break out in 2009. Given that they already have stars like Johnson and Fitzgerald, chances are they see 1 of the 4 sleeper RBs breakout, and all they need is one to be a contender in this fall's season. We see Chelan struggling early on as the sleeper RBs struggle to pick up the pace, but will rebound towards the end of the season when it matters. The Gulls will go 6-6 during the regular season, and 3-3 in league play. Look for the Gulls to surge through the playoff weeks.

Tomorrow we will post East Wenatchee's preview!

Overview

WENATCHEE - Michael Fontenot's Hornets come into 2009 bearing one of the best rosters on paper. Due to the early snagging of LaDainian Tomlinson by Moses Lake, Maurice Jones-Drew feel all the way to #5 to Fontenot's Hornets. Jones-Drew, poised for a big year, will be the work horse for the Hornet's lineup. Though, he will not be alone in breakout potential. Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward, two players poised to breakout now that neither player have to worry about the other(Ward played as the #2 RB behind Jacobs). The 6th round pick of Ward could prove to be that extra boost the Hornets need to succeed in 2009. Other breakout candidates include Donnie Avery and Dwayne Bowe, both players could add to the Hornet swarm. Peyton Manning is as good a starting QB as they come, and having a backup like Donovan McNabb doesn't hurt. The current star power and likely breakout players on this team has proved to show promise for the Cashmere Hornets, enough for the league owners to votes Cashmere into the #2 slot in the rankings, who came 1 point short of being ranked #1. We project Cashmere as having the best record in the CGFFL, going 8-4 in the regular season and 5-1 in conference. Here's to your Cashmere Hornets!

The Wenatchee Grizzlies open 2009 #1 in the CGFFL!

Okay owners, below are the preseason rankings. These final rankings were put together by using the below points system. So if Wenatchee ranked Cashmere at #4(Hypothetically), the Hornets would get 5 points for that. So I added everyone's rankings up and came up with the rankings below the points system.

Also, I will be releasing previews of each team in alphabetical order. The previews will include an overview of the team and a projection for their 2009 season. Tomorrow I start with Cashmere!
